(IT FAQ) About wireless at school

Wireless in the staffroom

The school has purchased a wireless switch which will be stationed in the staffroom. This will let your TELA laptop connect to the network in the staffroom without you having to muck around with wires.

How to connect wirelessly

Connecting successfully for the first time can require perseverance but subsequent connections should 'just work' without any hassles. I am happy to help with the initial connection but you can also have a go for yourself.

Here are the steps:

  1. Open 'Network Connections' from the Control Panel
  2. Check that 'Wireless Network Connection' is not disabled
  3. Check also that the blue-light wireless button above the F4 key is lit up
  4. Right-click the 'Wireless Network Connection' icon and choose 'View Available Wireless Networks' from the menu
  5. A wireless device called 'wswrt1' should be listed as shown in the screenshot below. Click it to highlight it, then click the button 'Connect'
  6. You should be prompted for a network key. This key is on a USB drive hanging on the wall of Bev's office
  7. Cut and paste the key from the file 'wireless.txt'
  8. Wait a minute then the wireless link should be connected
